UCLan tourism graduate sails to national award

A University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) graduate who cruised to her dream job has just won a national tourism award.

Bethany Higson from Wigan who graduated in 2015 has been named Best Undergraduate Student of Tourism by the Association for Tourism in Higher Education for the dedication and hard work she exhibited throughout the course.

Having secured a first-class degree after completing an undergraduate course in international tourism management, Bethany is now working for global cruise company World Travel Holdings.

The company, a partner of UCLan’s Management Graduate Scheme, was so impressed with Bethany’s work ethic and talent during her time at UCLan that she was offered a management graduate role.

In her current position Bethany is spending 12 months learning problem solving skills in all areas of the business. She said: “At UCLan I studied a wide range of work-related course modules which provided me with the knowledge and skills to succeed in my new job.  UCLan also has great support networks and contacts with industry which helped me to land my is great and has helped me in getting the job that I wanted. Winning this award is fantastic recognition, not just for me but also my tutors who helped me along the way.”
UCLan’s tourism department are extremely proud of Bethany’s achievement. Course Leader Dr Carley Sutton added: “Bethany’s enthusiasm for the tourism industry and dedication to gaining a wide range of skills whilst on the course, has enabled her to land this highly sought after graduate role. Bethany was a model student who fully deserves this recognition having taken up all the extra-curricular activities and work experience opportunities offered to her, enhancing her knowledge, skills and qualifications in the process.” 

The inspiring graduate and role model has since returned to UCLan to deliver a talk about her current position and how to succeed in the world of work to first year undergraduate students.
Bethany will receive her award at a special ceremony at St Anne’s College, Oxford in November.
